New Hire Orientation: What to Include

Day one can set the tone for the new hire’s time at your organization. That’s why it’s so important to approach the new-hire orientation with strategy, instead of treating it like a formality. Craft a new-hire orientation that includes all of the necessities to set your new employees up for a successful start.

The Basics

Give your new hires their own copies of the official company handbook, as well as any written reference materials containing important company and/or department policies. Take the time to actually go over the rules and how things are done with the new hires, and address any questions they may have.

Company Mission

Provide the full context of the organization’s goals and mission to the new employees during orientation. Knowing what the company stands for can help them get a full sense of how their contributions matter in the grand scheme of things, and help them feel more engaged in their new roles.

Clarification on Job Duties

Transition the verbiage from the job description into reality by discussing in detail the responsibilities the new employee will have. Go over your expectations for the short term, as well as your plan for increasing workload. Be as specific as possible so the new hire isn’t left wondering if they should be doing more or aren’t meeting unspoken expectations.

A Physical Tour

Think in terms of the new hire’s daily perspective when determining what places would be most helpful to be acquainted with. Show them around to the most relevant locations of the workplace, from where to park, get office supplies, or even get coffee.

“Unwritten Rules” of Company Culture

Level with the new employee and provide insight into the way everyday things are really handled at your workplace. Things that are so ingrained into your everyday routine may be completely foreign and a source of stress or confusion for new hires. This includes clocking in, how to take lunch, how much socializing takes place, and the overall tone of the company culture.
