Auto giant General Motors announced the layoff of over 1,000 employees from its Software and Services division on August 18.

The company communicated the decision via email, stating, “While Software and Services are crucial to GM’s ambitious vision for the future, we must make bold choices to move faster, pivot as needed, and focus on investments with the greatest impact.”

A LinkedIn post from an affected employee reads, “The only notice we received was an email sent out at 5 AM this morning, which I didn’t even see.”

To his dismay, he got to know about the layoff after arriving at work. “Today I found out, along with countless others, that I was laid off from GM. I arrived at work this morning to find my badge deactivated, my access to Teams and Outlook revoked, and directions from GM Security to leave the property. I was unable to tell my coworkers goodbye or thank them for the many memories we had… I couldn’t do anything but stand there in shock,” the post reads.

“There is a difference between being bold and being ruthless and cutthroat. That difference is empathy and compassion. Empathy and compassion for the people enable GM to be as successful as it is.”

“At the end of the day, GM proves that they have none. We are nothing but numbers to them, fat to be trimmed off in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Even though they recently celebrated a $4.6B profit in Q2 2024… that was not enough for them. We were not even given the common decency to say goodbye, just thrown onto the curb like useless trash.”
