Benefits are calculated based on a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings, adjusted for inflation, which is why averages increase as new retirees with higher earnings enter the system.
On the other hand, the SSI payments for May averaged $718.30. The maximum SSI benefit available for 2025 adds up to $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples.
