Lowe’s easter closing, employees get a rare break

Every year as Easter Sunday approaches, shoppers across the nation scramble to finalize their spring projects. This year, if you’re wondering, “Is Lowe’s open on Easter?” the answer is a firm no. On April 20, Lowe’s will honor its annual tradition of closing all 1,751 stores for 24 hours. It’s a move that has now become a hallmark of the company’s culture. The reason behind Lowe’s store closure in 2025 isn’t tied to financial woes or a sudden crisis; it’s a people-first move.

For at least five years, Lowe’s has shut down on Easter Sunday to give its roughly 300,000 workers an opportunity to spend the holiday with their loved ones.

Lowe's easter closing sunday

“It’s a signal that employees aren’t just cogs in a machine,” one labor organizer told The HR Digest off the record. “Lowe’s shutdown for Easter is a small but meaningful win.”

CEO Marvin Ellison has called it as “well-deserved day off”. It’s a gesture to reward Lowe’s workers. This has never been a one-off move; it’s a tradition that sets Lowe’s apart in a retail sector where holiday season often means putting in more hours at work.

How the closure affects Lowe’s employees

Imagine you’re a Lowe’s associate in San Antonio, where the chain has 10 stores among Texas Lowe’s locations closing for the day. You’ve spent weeks helping customers. Easter Sunday rolls around, and instead of clocking in, you’re at home enjoying a quiet brunch. That’s the reality for thousands of Lowe’s workers on April 20, 2025.

A cashier from a Texas store, told The HR Digest, “It’s a relief knowing I don’t have to beg for the day off. My family looks forward to Easter, and Lowe’s makes it happen.” Another, a stocker from Ohio, said, “Home Depot stays open, sure, but I’d rather have the holiday than the overtime.”

While Lowe’s isn’t heavily unionized, retail worker advocates often point to such closures for work-life balance. “It’s a signal that employees aren’t just cogs in a machine,” one labor organizer told The HR Digest off the record. “Lowe’s shutdown for Easter is a small but meaningful win.”

Lowe’s shut down, a tradition worth keeping

So, why is Lowe’s closing when it could rake in spring sales? The answer lies in its DNA. It’s about giving back to the people who make the company thrive.

Retail isn’t known for generosity with time off especially during the holiday seasons. Long hours, holiday shifts, and relentless customer demands are part of the job. Yet, Lowe’s store closure 2025 on Easter Sunday challenges that norm. It’s a rare nod to work-life balance in an industry that often prioritizes profit over people.

For employees, it’s more than a day off. “I’ve worked places where holidays didn’t exist,” a veteran Lowe’s associate shared. “Here, I feel seen.” That sentiment resonates across the chain, from Texas to Maine. And while Home Depot Easter hours might lure shoppers, Lowe’s bets on loyalty from within.

So, next time you’re debating Lowe’s vs Home Depot Easter plans, consider this: one’s open, but the other’s making a statement. And in 2025, that statement might just be the louder one.
