The new year has just begun but things are already changing monumentally at major organizations across the country. After Walmart, John Deere, and other major players, McDonald’s has also announced DEI changes across its business. After the initial burst of support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies in 2020, companies have begun backing away from their commitment to upholding the regulations they put into place in an effort to placate the masses at the time.

There are many companies gradually moving or reworking their DEI policies, but according to McDonald’s revision of its diversity initiative, inclusivity will remain a key feature in how the company operates.

McDonald’s DEI Policy Changes Hint at a Much Larger Trend

Becoming one of the largest companies to announce its DEI rollbacks, McDonald’s shared an email with employees and the public on January 6, 2025, announcing the company’s decision to make changes to its diversity practices from here on out. 

While the elimination of diversity principles served as a big blow to employees and customers alike, McDonald’s policy updates for 2025 don’t cut all activities that cater towards creating a welcoming and safe space at work.

In the statement provided by the company, it explained that inclusion was one of its core values and it has already achieved many of its diversity goals. For example, 30% of the company’s leadership is from underrepresented groups, and 78% of its employees scored the business positively on its Inclusion index overall.

“Everyone is welcome under our Golden Arches, and this broad-based appeal is why McDonald’s is one of the world’s most beloved brands. We’re proud of our culture at McDonald’s, and we want to thank all of you for living our values,” it explained.

Why Has McDonald’s Made Changes To Its Policy?

Many of the companies that left their DEI policies behind in 2024 began to do so after the Supreme Court ruled against the use of affirmative action in college admissions. Soon, other organizations took it as a cue that the socio-political landscape was evolving. 

McDonald’s revision of its diversity policy was also made after a Civil Rights Audit (CRA) which evaluated the standards of inclusions across the organization. The company reportedly engaged in discussions with shareholders, assessed the shifting legal landscape, and looked to competitors to determine its path forward. The strategizing led them to the decision to shift the focus more exclusively towards inclusion. 

In order to accomplish all of its intended changes, McDonald’s is transforming its diversity team to the Global Inclusion Team, to better represent its commitment to its “Golden Rule” of “treating everyone with dignity, fairness and respect, always.”

What Does McDonald’s DEI Policy Updates for 2025 Involve?

According to McDonald’s stance on the DEI changes, the company will continue to maintain its commitment to inclusive practices across the entire business. The fast food chain recommitted itself to maintaining its internal focus on efforts that support “building a diverse employee, Registered Applicant and supplier pipeline,” and maintaining pay equity while it prioritizes the retention of talent. 

The company’s business model is built on franchising and for this model to be successful, it has to ensure support for the communities. Leaders at McDonald’s are expected to continue ensuring that an inclusive environment is created for all the intertwined communities. 

“Additionally, McDonald’s will continue to transparently report our demographic information in our annual Purpose & Impact report with respect to the Board, employees, and suppliers,” it explained in the statement.

Instead of “setting aspirational representation goals” for the business, McDonald’s has recommitted to embedding inclusive practices in its everyday business proceedings. Its supply chain’s mutual commitment to the DEI pledge is being retired in favor of more active discussion on what inclusion means for the business and its partners. 

From the details showcased in McDonald’s DEI changes, it is evident that the company will still remain committed to ensuring the safety and inclusivity of all employees as it works towards its business goals, which is a central factor to remember in the matter.
